Manhattan Coast - “Man Up or Man Down”

Filmed this video quite a while back last year but they wanted to wait to put it out as I shot their Christmas music video too.

Absolutely love working with these guys and they always challenge my creative abilities with their video concepts. This one really had be rather excited as who doesn’t enjoy running around all day at a paintball center??

Unfortunately due to time constraints, we never managed to play a game but plenty of shots were fired thoughout the day.

I felt very nasty as I had to film several different angles and takes of people getting shot for real. One of the extras was absolutely fantastic to get shot three times at quite close range in the stomach. The first take I genuinely forgot to press the record button and the second time he forgot to fall in the right direction. I’m glad he never got hold of a weapon after that as I was sure he wanted revenge.

We had the complete run of the place so we found the perfect locations for shots.

Still to this day I have splatters of yellow paint on my camera and my gear!

A video I made in December last year for Southampton band, Forever Can Wait.

We had a lot of fun shooting this video and even better is, it wasn’t any of there houses so somehow we managed to totally rip the place up and clear all furniture to accommodative a band performance and narrative in almost every bedroom.

Short Break

Many of you may have noticed I haven’t posted on here for a while.

I have taken a short break from work and will continue to do so for the next month or 2 due to personal reasons.

I will still be available to answer questions and take bookings for the late spring and early summer onwards.

Music videos can still be booked and undertaken thanks to a new videographer that I am working with.

Set Sail Studios is still going as per normal and Sam and our new illustrator Warren are still both hard at work so please continue to support us.

Many thanks for all your continued support and I look forward to getting back to work soon.

Offender - The Father

My latest music video shot in Portsmouth just before my tour with Architects. I’ve known a couple of these guys for a while through some of the Bury Tomorrow guys so I was really happy when I was asked to shoot a video for them.

I left the location up to them and they came up trumps finding a huge abandoned warehouse. Not sure when it was last in use but there were topless lady calendars lying around from the early 90s!

Some of the guys originally wanted the video in black and white but watching back over some of the clips, the colours in the location were dark and bland enough which we all agreed looked better.

Was a really relaxed shoot for once which I much prefer and the guys are very laid back about it all so I had a really good day.

With One Last Breath - I’m Taking Over

This was my very last job of 2012 finishing this on Christmas Eve.

The background of this lyric video is their new EP cover which Sam Parrett knocked up for them so it was great to integrate his work into mine.

Spent a few weeks with these guys early in 2012 on a tour with Bury Tomorrow and Of Mice & Men. They’ve also just signed to Small Town Records so watch up for them!

I want to keep this fairly short and I won’t be naming every band I have worked with.

2012 was one of the most memorable years I’ve had.

It started with a short tour with Heights on the Biohazard tour and before I knew it, I was filming and photographing some of the best UK and European festivals.

Just before 2012 started I was documenting the recording of Bury Tomorrow’s new album, The Union Of Crowns. I then went on to follow them everywhere they went which included a UK tour with Architects and Of Mice & Men. I watched them play new songs from The Union Of Crowns at the start of the year for the first time and also watched them play the same songs later in the year to crowds of thousands as they all sang the words back.

They kindly took me to Spain with them a few days early before a festival out there as a mini holiday in Valencia. One of my biggest highlights was Greenfields festival out in Switzerland with them. One of the most eye pleasing surroundings I’ve ever been with beautiful weather and an incredible line up of bands so my first and biggest thank you goes out to to Bury Tomorrow, their TM and all the drivers we’ve had.

In early 2013 I’ll be starting work on a short DVD of their year which I’m looking forward to.

I’ve toured with Of Mice & Men, documenting them at the UK Slam Dunk festivals. They were great guys to be with and I look forward to hanging out with them again.

I got my first double page spread in a national magazine, Rocksound. I got another music video on TV, this time for Bleed From Within. I’ve worked with Charlotte Church in her studio by her house.

I want to say a huge thank you to Vlad and the rest of the Italian metalband, The Doomsayer for flying me out to Italy to shoot a music video. 3500 meters in the beautiful Alps was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do just on loading the gear to the location alone. Earlier in the year I spent a fantastic week with them in the studio while they recorded their EP.

I’ve worked with so many bands and artists this year so I’m not going to name all of them. I would like to say a big thank you to a few bands in particular though who I’ve worked with a few different times throughout my years as a photographer and videographer and they are Ruins Will Rise, All To Ruin, The Missive, Manhattan Coast and What The Night Brings to name just a few. Thanks guys!

Thank you to EVERY SINGLE band I’ve worked with, emailed, met etc. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with all of you.

The biggest thank you is saved till last and that goes to Sam Parrett. We started Set Sail Studios in August of 2011 and he has been responsible for all of the design work for bands as well as our own branding and website. I’m very lucky and thankful to be working with him!

As for Set Sail Studios, we’ve just started working with an incredible illustrator and I’m in the process of building a team of people for video work so I’m really excited for 2013.

Thanks also to anyone that reads this blog. As far as I’m aware only my Dad and Tom Welsh (thanks Tom Welsh for you’re help this year) read this but I doubt even they have bothered reading this far down!

I really hope I haven’t missed anything or anyone out of this!! I’m trying to remember the whole year without my diary at hand so forgive me!

I hope to work with all of you again in 2013 plus so many more talented bands and artists.

Another lack of updates on here, again partly due to me forgetting but also been incredibly busy and travelling all over the country for various jobs.

One of these included a trip to Derby to spend time shooting Life and Limb which is the new band fronted by Tom Debaere (Ex Heights frontman). I shot a few promos (above) and some video for a short teaser which will be out soon. I have toured with Tom a few times so it’s great to see him fronting a band again.

I also caught up with the guys in All To Ruin again for a fresh set of promos (see above again). I’ve worked with these guys since I started so it’s always great to see them again. Really funny guys and the best thing is they all love KFC as much as me so we hunted one down after the shoot. They were also kind enough to send me the tracks from EP which has been on loop since I’ve had it!

Apart from the odd one off small job, it will just be solid editing until 2013 for me! Just as well as the weather is getting horribly cold so I’m happy not to be trekking around a mountain or field for a promo shoot to get frostbite.

Lack of updates for the last week are merely due to fact I’ve been editing so nothing much to report on.

Did a couple of a promo shoots over the last week, first one with What The Night Brings (first three photos above) and then with a new Welsh band, Hallencourt (last 2 photos).

More updates to come shortly once my videos start getting released by the bands so stay tuned.

The video I made for Monster Energy at Warped tour has been online for the last week but I have only just found it. It hasn’t been linked very well which would explain the low number of views but here it is none the less.

This was the third version of this video after everyone from Monster had decided which bits they wanted left in and taken out etc. I made most of this on my lap in Bury Tomorrows tour bus on my way to venues.

Touring is over for 2012.

Finished the Architects tour a couple of days ago. I promised myself I wouldn’t work when I got home for a day or two but that lasted only a few hours.

A great line up of bands to end the year on and spend a couple of weeks watching every night, not to mention the even more impressive Warped Tour that landed on the second day of this tour.

Watching Architects last show was incredible, more so because it was their 99th show from an ‘almost’ world tour.

I will be finishing the rest of 2012 shooting music videos and promo shoots. I still have a few spaces left to fill before 2013 as I had a tour cancel on me and although many of these dates have now been filled, get in touch and I will do my best to fit you in.

Look forward to hearing from you and for us to work together.

Tour Update.

Only 2 more shows left on this tour. We drove back to stay in Leeds last night with the couple who were on BBC Three’s, ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’.

The guy is also a tattoo artist so a couple of the BT boys thought it would be a good idea to go down to the studio to get #DTTB (Don’t Tell The Bride) tattooed on them (!!!) and also allow Dav and Dani to tattoo the tattoist! (!!!!)

I stayed well away from any inkings but filmed the whole thing.

My camera took it’s first proper knock in the studio unfortunately as I tried to force my camera on the mono pod when I hadn’t noticed the battery flap wasn’t connected properly and I bent it, meaning the camera wouldn’t turn on.

I took a risk with pliers to bend the plastic back and it worked. Not sure how long for so will get a spare as soon as I’m back home.

Just arrived at Rock City in Nottingham. They’ve spruced up the backstage area since the last time I was here but they have still decided to use the smallest dressing room for both Bury Tomorrow and Acacia Strain.

Tonight and tomorrow left.

Really looking forward to starting this video. One of the best songs I’ve worked with in a while and the guys were full of energy even until the last take.

A few shots I took from the Bury Tomorrow Glasgow Garage show 14.11.2012.

This has been my busiest tour without a doubt, more so because of my new laptop I can take more of my work on the road with me.

Not only have I been filming and photographing Bury Tomorrow, I have also been working on the Warped Tour video for Monster Energy, and helping Tom Welsh (Get Deluxe) being second (or even third or forth) camera assistant for a few Architects songs.

This is my second time touring with Tom Welsh and he is an incredibly inspirational guy. Since the last time we toured together he has massively upgraded his camera equipment so I spent the first few days in awe of his new toys! He also claims to read my blog so I will expect a text off him once he’s read this to prove he’s not lying ha!

Only three shows left on this tour, then I have a few days back in Cardiff, before I am off on a smaller tour with The Soulless, which then wraps up my year of touring for a while.

Newcastle tomorrow.
